A Conversation With Women In International

CFA is proud to announce its first virtual event to be held on 18 March 2021, 17.00 CET featuring some of the most prominent names in the international legal field. We are thrilled to be joined by Prof. Beth van Schaak, Prof. Guilia Pinzauti, Carolyn Edgerton, and Arzu Ongur to commemorate international women’s day, as they take us through their journey in the international legal field.

Arzu Ongur is the managing partner of Ongur & Partners International Law Office and the President of ILIDA International Law Investment and Development Association. She is a renowned lawyer based in Turkey, with expertise in international law, arbitration, consultation and litigation. She has a wide-range of professional work experience of working on complex legal disputes, international arbitration and cross-border transactions over 15 years in Turkey and overseas, including Italy, Belgium and the USA.

Beth Van Schaak is the Leah Kaplan Visiting Professor in Human Rights at Stanford Law School where she teaches in the areas of international human rights, international criminal law, and human trafficking, among other subjects, and has been the Acting Director of the Human Rights & Conflict Resolution Clinic. She is also a Faculty Fellow with Stanford’s Center for Human Rights & International Justice at Stanford University.

Carolyn Edgerton is a Canadian lawyer with almost 30 years of experience in domestic and international criminal investigations and prosecutions, the greatest part of which was spent working as a Legal Officer and Trial Attorney with the International Criminal Tribunal of the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), where among other things, from 2008-2014 she was the component leader responsible for the prosecution of Radovan Karadzic for the siege of Sarajevo. She now dedicates her practice to justice and the rule of law, and over the course of the past year alone has worked on projects connected with Afghanistan, Gambia and the republic of Georgia.

Giulia Pinzauti is an assistant professor at the Grotius Centre for International Law, at Leiden University. Prior to joining the Grotius Centre, she served as an associate legal officer at the International Court of Justice and in the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals. Giulia also previously worked as part of the legal staff for the Pre-Trial Judge and the Appeals Chamber at the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

We request your esteemed attendance for our very first event, as we provide a unique chance to learn from the experts on how to make it in international law as young professionals. So tune in for some great advice and a discussion on being a woman in international law! The registration links for the event will be put on all social media channels of YICL, so stay tuned. We look forward to welcoming you all!
